Matthew Keeney

Art In A User Generated Culture

With the rise of user generated content we have seen an increase in the level of participation within our contemporary culture, this shift has caused the mediums of photography and video to be redefined. The accessibility of the equipment and tools necessary to work in these mediums has allowed for the proliferation of their content across our visual culture. With video, in particular, we see a vernacular quality emerge, where short clips are exchanged frequently as a type a quick message. Thus, material is no longer simply presented; it is viewed, manipulated and then reintroduced, creating a new dynamic between the viewer and the content.
