Bushwacking - Stepping off the beaten path
It's okay to walk off into the forest and decide where you want to go and how to get there. One doesn't necessarily need to be a boyscout or know how to use a compass to have fun off-trail. All it takes is a reasonably good sense of direction, some technical skills and a GPS. There are plenty of great places to bushwhack locally, feel free to explore the woods, the parks and that strange area under the overpass that you've been wondering about.
