Justin Sabe
Hip to the Hop/Hack. Hiphop, hacking and music as a meme
Hiphop was started when Grand Master Flash took his electrical engineering degree and the desire to extend the the best part of the song and built the hardware and technique. From scratch a movement was born (see what I did there?).
Music travels and changes as memnetic information from the fringe to the center as it interacts with other music and cultures. Street culture, dirty, gritty, diy, left field, anything non mainstream that comes from the people for them self and not as a product to sell grows from new ideas and new combinations of old methods and lives or dies by if it is meaningful to someone. This is shown over and over again from Country Music and New Orleans jazz having the same catalog of tunes to the early punk rock movement and the Gypsy and brass bands in Eastern Europe.
Hiphop invented new tools and took directly from proven music to make something new and unique that was just right at the time. From street parties on to top 40 music Hip Hop was slowly accepted and then assimilated changing Hip Hop as much as it had change the musical landscape.
2 Turn tables, a microphone, scavenged amp and mixer parts and a soldering iron stared a new musical tradition.
About Justin Sabe:
Justin Sabe used to play keytar in a touring goth/industrial band but now draws on his high school band experience to play flugal horn in a local radical marching street band. He also is a standing member of the Baltimore Node hacker space, a Fluid Movement water ballet director and got an amateur radio license just for the technical challenge and to annoy his ham friends by never keying up ever.
